K'alyaan Pole by Tommy Joseph

Pictures

Most pictures on this site are either ones I've taken or from my family. I've noted otherwise. Please let me know if I'm wrong. To the left is the K'alyaan pole that resides in the fort area at Sitka National Historic Park (Totem Park). It was carved by Tommy Joseph and Fred Andrew Beltran.

This Site

There are many, many resources on the Internet relating to Native people. Tlingit people are well represented as you would find by doing a simple search in Google. I started this site in 2001 while I was still in college. My hope was my family would take the idea and make contributions to it. However, not everyone has the knowledge to create and maintain a website.

When I returned to Sitka a couple years ago, I started shaping the idea into what it is now. This site has a Sitka focus and furthermore, a Kiksadi focus. As many websites on the web, it will continue to evolve over time; hopefully with contributions from others from our clan. I took the domain Kiksadi.com because I felt if anyone should own the domain, it should be a clan member. That I know what to do with it is a bonus. I remember years ago in Sitka, there was a bar named Kiksadi Club. It did much disrespect to our clan name and culture. I hope to do the opposite with this site.

Ultimately, I felt Tlingit people in Sitka could be better represented to all the visitors than they have been. I feel I can do this in a couple ways. I was born and raised in Sitka. I am a son of Kaagwaantaan, and my mother is Kikshaw, which makes me Kiks.adi. Therefore, I have many resources to draw on to help represent us. Also, I've provided an avenue for other Tlingit people to express who we are on my other site. Any registered user can edit that site. Please use the links I've provided to contact me with any concerns.

Tlingit Spelling

The Tlingit names and pronunciations are different in the traditional language than what I use on this site. For instance, Sitka is short for Shee Atika, and even further Sheet'ka. Also, I use Kiksadi vs. Kiks.adi. The latter is the preferred representation of the word. Tlingit is spelled Tlinget or 'Linigit by purists of the language. One of my favorites is how Katlian is really K'alyaan. For simplicity I use the more western approach, though I am pure Kiks.adi.
